The Palestinians of Syria .. the ultimate price

Since the Syrian revolution broke out in Syria in 2011, thousands of people were killed , more than 9 million people have fled their homes. But tens of thousands of others detained by Syrian government forces_ didn’t have the chance to run.

Ahmad Mohammad Al Bernawi, died in Assad's detentions , after two years of agonizing torture at the hands of security forces, according to the Center for Documentation of Violations to Palestinians detainees and missing in Syria.

Al Bernawi, a Palestinia_syrian , who used to live in the Palestinian refugee camp " Yarmouk", which lies a few kilometers south of Damascus and, until recently, was one of the centers of intellectual and cultural life in the Palestinian diaspora. He was victim No. 438 of the Palestinians- Syrians , who have been killed under torture in Assad's prisons, according to the Action Group For Palestinians of Syria, which added in their statistics, the documentation of more than 1060 Palestinian detainees in Syrian prisons, including more than 75 women. In addition to more than 280 missing. Amid expectations that the numbers are much higher than what has been announced, because of the imposed secrecy on the fate of female detainees and their names.

The London-based group is documenting violations and abuses committed against Palestinians residing in Syria, according to their periodic reports, which are presented in a daily and monthly reports , showing the latest statistics on Palestinians inside and outside Syria .

Until the end of last year, the group has documented the deaths of more than 3080 Palestinians in Syria , due to many reason , including : torture , clashes , bombing , drowning while trying to reach Europe by the sea to seek asylum , among them , 446 women .

And according to its latest statistics, about 130 thousand Palestinian- Syrian are now refugees outside Syria, 15,500 of them in Jordan, 42,500 in Lebanon and 6,000 in Egypt, and more than 72 thousand in Europe.

Palestinians of Syria have paid a heavy price in the Syrian war, when Assad's regime used the Palestine cause as a pretext to launch a frenzied war against his own people, pretending to be the leader of " resistance" against the Israeli occupier .

And observers say, that statistics show that Palestinians in Syria were tormented massively , whether opponents of the regime , who were imprisoned , killed, deported, or starved to death , or even the loyalists , who were put at the front lines of the battles and in the most dangerous war zones , leading to the deaths and wounding of hundreds of them , especially at the outskirt of Damascus.

Before the crisis in Syria, Palestinians used to live in 17 camps , the biggest is "Yarmouk refugee camp", southern of the capital Damascus , which has been under a suffocating siege imposed by the Syrian regime and some Palestinian militias loyal to Bashar al Assad, for 3 years now, and it harvested the lives of 186 civilians , mostly , elderly, disabled, and children, due to the severe lack of food and medicine , according to local sources.

The refugee camp which was designed as a safe haven for the Palestinian diaspora , had become the worst place on earth. No electricity. No piped water. No access for food. Worse still, no chance for people to leave or return, and resources say that 18 thousand Palestinians and Syrians are still living under the siege , out of more than half a million people that were living in it until 2011.

History repeats itself , as observers say that Assad's regime is annihilating Palestinians camps in Syria , the same way he did to Palestinians in Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp in Lebanon , while portraying itself as the protector and the leader of the Palestinian cause at the international platforms .
